Time to fly🛫: The Toast 🥪
FIRST IMPRESSION ☝
When I first came to The Toast, my immediate thought was that it is a Toast Box dupe. The concept and aesthetics of The Toast was very similar - Scandinavian vibes. There is al fresco seating outside, but do be aware that it might get noisy.
On the inside, the first thing that came to my mind was cramped. The tables were around an arms length away from each other, and the place was PACKED.
TASTE😋
For this review, I tried their otak-otak egg sandwich, as well as the nasi lemak with fried chicken meat.
Otak-otak(otah) egg sandwich 🥪

*i used otak-otak and otah interchangeably |
Otak-otak is a fish cake seasoned with spices and traditionally grilled in banana leaf.
When eating this sandwich, I had a few criterions in my mind. Firstly, is the otah spicy and flavourful enough. Secondly, does all of the components inside the sandwich work well together, and lastly whether it was worth the price.
Seeing that the otah was the main ingredient of this dish, it truly did not disappoint. To me, the most important component of the otah is ensuring that the spiciness does not override the fishy taste of the otah. I mean, why call it otah if you cannot taste the fish. When you bite into the sandwich, you will notice that there is a substantial amount of otah in just one bite. But even then, I was still able to taste the rest of the components in the sandwich. Now, that's a shocker.
However, my one problem would be the dressing that they used. If I remember correctly, they used a thousand island mayonnaise hybrid. During the first few bites, I found that it was not too bad. However, I thought that this combination of mayonnaise and otah was a bit odd to me. I don't mind it, but I would have preferred the dressing to be less flavourful, such that it doesn't clash with the flavour of the otah.
Nasi lemak with fried chicken meat 🍗
The best way to describe nasi lemak is coconut milk infused rice wrapped in pandan leaf. For a nasi lemak, the key features would be the smell of the rice, as well as the spiciness of the sambal that they used. Given that this nasi lemak lies on the pricier side, should you still give it a try?
Firstly, let's talk about their rice. On first smell, you can definitely tell that there is coconut infused into the rice. It smells strong, but it doesn't taste as strong. The flavour of the rice was a bit mild, but you would still be able to taste the coconut when you pair it with the sides. With that, I would say that the rice is a pass.
Secondly, their sambal. For some context, sambal is like a chili sauce but thick and very flavourful. In this case, their sambal was mixed with onions, which is something that I can hardly find in Singapore. In order for a sambal to be good, it should have a kick, but not to the extent that it masks the rest of the dish. For this sambal, you can definitely feel a punch to the back of your throat, but the sweetness of the onions balances it out. At the same time, this sambal paired so well with the rice. Given that the taste of the rice is not as strong, the spiciness of the sambal complemented the fragrance of the rice so well to the point that you would not need any other sides to pair with the meal.
Lastly, let's talk about their chicken. For this dish, they used chicken strips instead of chicken wings. The general consensus when it comes to eating chicken would be that it should always be bone in. The trend is that the meat would be dry without the bone. However, that was one juicy piece of meat. When I bit into the chicken, i could feel the juice of the chicken oozing out. At the same time, the flavour of the marinade was impeccable. The brine was savory and umami, but not overly salty and over powering.
My verdict - it is good. Now if you are not a local, I will admit that this is not the most authentic form of nasi lemak. If you do decide to try traditional nasi lemak in Malaysia, go to those street stores on the side of the road which sells nasi lemak for around RM2. Those are truly the most authentic form of nasi lemak that you could get.
PRICE 💸
For the sandwich, it was around RM9, while the nasi lemak was RM12. Given the quality of the food and that it is a "cafe", I find that this is already very reasonable. There is a stereotype of cafes being overpriced but serving mediocre food, but this place is the complete opposite.
MY TWO CENTS 🪙🪙
Overall, if you are looking to try local foods in a comfortable atmosphere, do give The Toast a visit. The taste of their dishes are comparable to what you can find locally albeit it being a cafe. However, do try to get there as early as possible since it is a pretty popular spot. At the end of the day, you have your own opinions, and I have mine too. So remember, you do you 😁
And that's the end of my first ever overseas food review🛫. I hope that you guys had a good read📖 as well as a good laugh 😆while at it. That's all for today, bye bye 👋
