Plate profiles🍽️: Don Don Donki Pork Katsu Don 🍱

For every Don Don Donki that you go to, one of the items that you might catch frequently besides the sweet potatoes are the hot food items. Today, I will be reviewing one of Donki's most popular hot foods - the Pork Katsu Don.

PRICE 💸

$8.90

FIRST IMPRESSION ☝

My favourite part of buying this is that the rice is separated from the pork. This means that the rice won't be wet or soggy, which is always best. At the same time, the amount of rice and meat that they provide is very substantial.

However, you can tell that the fried katsu has been marinating in the sauce for quite a while. To be fair, I had it quite late in the day. But when you pick it up, you can see the skin separating from the meat, which is very sad 😞

TASTE 😋

Soggy. Because of how long it was sitting in the juices, the meat sort of soaked it all up. And the sogginess does not apply to just the meat but the eggs as well. I wouldn't say it is unpleasant, but it was just a very wet experience in all. The meat was also very tough to bite into. It is that feeling of trying to bite into the meat without the sauce getting every where which makes me not want to eat it again in public (place emphasis on public). The meat is also the kind that would get stuck into the gaps of your tooth😬, in which you then proceed to get it out with your tongue 👅. That was how tough the meat was. The flavour was simple, there is really not much to add to that.

Other than that, there is a very light dashi taste that was used in the dish. It was savoury with a hint of sweetness and msg. I liked the way the katsu and the rice paired together with the sauce. Honestly I feel that for something that is meant to be eaten after sitting for a long time, the flavour profile is just right.

MY TWO CENTS 🪙🪙

Eat it only when you are in a rush ⏰ and trying to find something affordable to eat. Other than that, it's better off finding another tonkatsu restaurant to eat 🔭. To be fair, I find that it is not too bad to eat especially since it is meant to be "fast food". You can get it fast, and it is also substantial enough to keep you full. But if you are looking to get katsu don that is a bang for your buck, do try out Katsu-An (review in my website).

At the end of the day, you sort of pay for what you get, and this is not bad. Remember, these are my two cents, you do you. All right, that's all for today, bye bye 👋
