Plate profiles🍽️: Xin Wang's Sweet and Sour Pork Rice

Remember how I said that you could probably find a Swensen's anywhere? Well, the same can be said for Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe. Today on plate profiles, we will be looking at their Sweet and Sour Pork Rice

FIRST IMPRESSION ☝

When the food first arrived, my eyes were immediately drawn to the size of the meat chunks. The amount of meat was substantial, however one look and you can tell it's not crispy but not in a bad way. I love the egg, it is literal perfection.

Additionally, the serving size was larger than expected. I was expecting the portion to be rather small considering it is a "cafe". However, I found myself unable to finish the entire dish by myself, so do share this dish with someone else if you have a smaller appetite.

$9.90 before GST and service charge

TASTE 😋

On first taste, the most distinct flavour would be the lychee. In my opinion, having lychee in sweet and sour pork rice is a bit hard to find, but this place does it. I will admit I am not the biggest fan of having lychee in my sweet and sour pork. There is the distinct lychee flavour, which to me sort of steals the spotlight away from the other flavours in the sauce.

Remember how I said the meat is not crispy. It wasn't. If I'm not wrong, the meat was lightly battered and then shallowed fried, that's why it wasn't crispy. However, the lack of crispiness was compensated by the vegetables🧅. The combination of the fresh, crisp vegetables accompanied with the thick, substantial chunks of meat, I'm in heaven😌.

MY TWO CENTS🪙🪙

Considering the cost, quantity and taste, I would say it is somewhat worth it. I must admit that you might be able to find better sweet and sour pork rice outside for a cheaper price, but remember lychees are expensive💰. If you are a big fan of sweet and sour pork which has a more distinct lychee flavour, I would say give it a try👍.

Now, there are definitely other items that you should try at Xin Wang. What I would recommend for you to try would be their spam and egg sandwich🍔. Simple, yet complex💥. Well, if you are looking for a taste of somewhat authentic Hong Kong cha chaan teng (tea restaurant) experience, do give Xin Wang Hong Kong Cafe a try. Well, that's all for today, bye bye 👋
